Hulda Campbell

Hulda Campbell, 95 years old, passed peacefully early Friday morning, June 22, 2012 at the home of her daughter in Berkshire. Hulda is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law: Louise and Roland Smullen, Concord, NC and Linda and Mike (Clifford) Tottey, Berkshire, her grandchildren: Laurie Tottey, Pamala (Rocky) Cunningham, Michael Tottey and Susan (Brandon) Dempster, 5 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law: Freda Umiker, Addie Campbell and several nieces and nephews. Hulda was born in Wettingen, Aargau, Switzerland on Nov 3, 1916 a daughter of Karl and Anna (Hoffman) Umiker. With her mother and 4 siblings (Karl, Julius, Erwin and Anna), she traveled on the steamship Columbus, leaving from Breman, Germany on Oct. 14, 1926 to be united with her father. Eight days later, they arrived at Ellis Island in NY to begin their new life in the United States. On Nov. 30, 1939, she married Carlton O. Campbell in Elmira. Together, they owned and operated the family dairy farm in Berkshire, for many years. Carlton passed in 1997 after 57 years of marriage. Hulda was a devoted member of the East Berkshire United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was an excellent cook and a quiet and demure woman. She will be greatly missed.

Her family will receive friends at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig St. Newark Valley on Monday, June 25th from 1-2 PM. A funeral service and celebration of her life will follow there at 2PM with Rev. Viki Andrews officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Berkshire. Friends wishing, may kindly direct memorials to the East Berkshire United Methodist Church in loving memory of Hulda Campbell.
